Canadian homes face big changes in temperature and humidity throughout the year. During winter, furnaces pull moisture from indoor air; in summer, humidity climb quickly. For natural wood, that constant movement may cause cracks, warping and squeaks.
If you live with little ones and four-legged friends, you have probably learned that floors suffer. Paws, toys, spills and snow and slush will stain the wrong floor in no time. Luckily: current flooring products are designed to stand up to everyday chaos.
Selecting the right floor is one of the biggest decisions you can make during a remodeling project. Here in Canada, the choice is even more important because our interiors must handle freezing winters, humid summers, melting snow and de-icing salt tracked in on every boot.
Hardwood remains the classic choice. It adds warmth that many buyers love, and it can be refinished many times over its life. This means quality hardwood will last for decades. It usually adds the value of a home in most cities.
Everything starts at the entrance. Place a rough outdoor mat and a soft absorbent mat inside the main entrances. Two mats stops most of the dirt and salt before it gets to your floors. Set up a boot tray so wet boots aren't left on your flooring.
If you are choosing a wood-look floor, two products almost always top the list: laminate and natural hardwood. Both can be attractive, but they have important differences when it comes to price, performance and lifespan.
Finally, make sure you look at samples in the actual room. Tones may appear very different at home. If you want professional guidance and a wide selection of hardwood, laminate and vinyl, take a look at Canada Floors Depot and start planning your project today.
Salt residue often leaves a white film that can etch the surface of your floor. Clean salt marks promptly with a damp microfibre mop and a floor-specific cleaner. Stay away from soaking the floor on hardwood and laminate.
Modern laminate has come a long way significantly. Good laminate products use detailed photographic layers and embossed textures that appear remarkably natural. Its protective surface keeps it very resistant to scratches, and it comes in lower. Many laminates now include improved water resistance.
The right underlay also hides minor imperfections in the base and gives a little cushioning and warmth. Remember, however, it does not replace a flat subfloor: large dips and bumps should be corrected beforehand.
Before you buy, check the veneer thickness. A thicker top layer allows sanding and refinishing in the future, extending its lifespan. Also maintain humidity between roughly 35 and 55 percent all year long.
What you get is a floor that feels exactly like solid hardwood while behaves better in our climate. Because it moves less, engineered hardwood is often suitable in places in which solid hardwood is not recommended, like basements and on concrete.
Your starting point is to think about the way you live in each space. A busy entryway requires a durable, easy-care surface, while a guest room can focus more on comfort and warmth. Wet areas work best with waterproof products like LVP or tile.
Moisture protection is another key function, particularly over concrete. Concrete often releases moisture constantly, so an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier protects wood-based floors from warping.
When shopping for new floors, visite site most of the attention goes to colour, the style and price. However what lies beneath the boards matters just as much. A good underlayment improves comfort, noise levels and protection against moisture, while can help your new floor stay beautiful for years.
A final tip: some vinyl and laminate products come with a built-in underlay. When that is the case, adding a second layer can lead to movement and affect the warranty. Make sure to check the manufacturer's guidelines.
Is hardwood an option? It is possible, though be selective. Harder woods like oak, maple or hickory are more resistant, while low-sheen finishes or textured surfaces camouflage small scratches better than a shiny finish.
That is exactly where engineered hardwood really shines. Rather than using one solid board, engineered wood consists of multiple layers: a top layer of real wood bonded to a dimensionally stable base. The cross-layered construction reduces expansion and contraction.
So, which one should you choose? When long-term value plus refinishing potential are what you want, consider hardwood. When cost, scratch resistance and easy maintenance are more important, laminate is a smart choice.
Humidity also matters and is another key factor. When the furnace is running, the air inside gets very dry, leading to hardwood to shrink and cracks to open. A humidifier keeping humidity at a stable level helps protect your wood floors as well as your comfort.
One of its main jobs is to provide noise control. Floors that are not glued down can sound hollow without a good underlay. The right underlay reduces impact sound, something that is especially important in apartments and condos where condo boards often set a minimum IIC or STC rating.
