Luxury vinyl have become the most popular choice in wet areas. Waterproof cores guarantee that spills cannot harm the planks as long as you clean them up. Vinyl stays warmer underfoot than ceramic, something a real plus in the cold season.
LVP is usually the best choice below grade. Most vinyl products are completely waterproof, meaning they will not be damaged if moisture shows up. Rigid-core vinyl can also bridge minor imperfections in the concrete.
The first line of defence is the entrance. Use a heavy-duty mat outside plus a soft absorbent mat inside each door. Using both catches much of the snow and grit before it gets to your floors. Add a boot tray to make sure wet boots never sit on your flooring.
Engineered hardwood is a possibility if you want a genuine wood surface. Due to its layered construction, it resists moisture swings better than solid wood, which is not recommended below grade. Install it with a moisture barrier to protect it.
What about hardwood in wet areas? Some modern laminates can be a good fit for kitchens, provided that moisture is dealt with quickly. Engineered hardwood may also work in a kitchen with caution, but in bathrooms with a shower or tub, vinyl or tile stay the recommended options.
Climate plays a major role. Traditional solid wood shrinks and swells with changes in humidity, so it performs best once it has acclimatized and controlled humidity. Engineered hardwood provides the same natural look with improved stability, making it a favourite in our climate.
Finishing a basement is a great way to gain extra square footage and comfort in your house. However lower levels bring special challenges: concrete slabs, dampness plus colder floors. The wrong floor can lead to mold, swelling and wasted money.
When your household includes little ones and four-legged friends, you already know how quickly floors take a beating. Claws, toys, spills and wet paws can scratch a delicate surface in no time. The good news: today's flooring options are made to handle everyday chaos.
Ceramic and porcelain tile is extremely durable, though it can feel cold underfoot unless install a heated floor system. Wall-to-wall carpet, on the other hand, is cozy yet can trap moisture, so rugs over a hard floor are often a better solution.
Porcelain tile are still a timeless option. It is nearly impervious to water, long-lasting and available in a huge variety of styles, including wood-look planks to marble and stone looks. Look for tiles with good slip resistance for safety, then add radiant heating for winter comfort.
Is hardwood an option? Absolutely, but be selective. Dense species like hickory and white oak resist dents better, while wire-brushed textures and textured surfaces hide everyday wear better than glossy floors.
LVP is often the first recommendation for families. It's waterproof, so spilled drinks are simple to handle. A durable top layer helps prevent scratches from claws, while the softer surface feels quieter for kids playing on the floor.
Before anything else, check the humidity of the concrete. A basic moisture test like taping a square of plastic to the floor for 24 to 48 hours can show if moisture is rising. Fix any leaks before you install new flooring.
Quality laminate is also a great option. The tough wear layer stays tough against scuffs and scratches, sometimes better than vinyl. Look for tw.8fun.neT products with a high abrasion rating and good moisture protection for families with pets.
Your starting point is to look at the purpose of each room. A mudroom needs a durable, easy-care surface, whereas a bedroom may prioritize comfort and warmth. Wet areas are best served by water-resistant materials like LVP or porcelain tile.
Whatever material you choose, focus on the details: caulking around the tub and toilet, correct transitions and a flat, dry subfloor. Those small details make all the difference for how long the floor stays beautiful.
Budget is also a major consideration. Modern laminate offers a realistic wood look for less money, and LVP combines affordability with excellent moisture protection. Don't forget to factor in underlayment, trims and moldings, and labour when comparing prices.
Road salt often leaves a white film that will dull the finish of your floor. Wipe up salty puddles as soon as possible using a soft mop and a cleaner made for your type of floor. Never use steam mops on hardwood and laminate.
The outcome is flooring with the look identical to traditional wood while performs better in our climate. Since it moves less, engineered hardwood can be used in areas where solid hardwood is not recommended, including basements or on concrete.
Kitchens and bathrooms count as the busiest rooms in any home. They see spills, steam, dropped dishes and constant cleaning. The floor you install for these rooms has to be water-resistant, tough and easy to clean without sacrificing good looks.
Canadian winters are magical, yet winter is hard on flooring. Melting snow, road salt, sand and dry heated air will dull your floors if left unchecked. With some simple precautions, you can protect your flooring in top shape all season long.
